Carol Vernallis studied editing and camerawork closely within music videos. She discovered through observing music videos that :
1.edits come much more frequently than within films
2.many of videos are identified as disjuncture.
3.editing seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.
Her theory focuses around four main concepts which are the narrative, camerawork, editing and the diegeis. These concepts relate to how the music video is made.
Narrative- When putting Vernallis theory into practice she states the music video is a visual response to the narrative. Whatever the viewer is seeing on the screen is reflecting the words the artist is singing . However she states that the narrative is not always complete as there are other elements within the video that affects this such as it being disconnected as it may not exactly be a narrative, Therefore the video may be left unfinished at the end of the song which can lead to a disjuncture form of music video.
Camerawork- She recognizes that within music videos establishing and master shots are the features to a music video as it shows the location of the video so that the audience understand where the music video is taking place. This allows them to establish the reason why the music video is being film in a specific location. Also the close ups allow the audience to analyse the artists emotions, feelings and expressions.
Editing- Vernallis states that within music videos they may break the conventions of continuity editing. This process is broken by features such as; Jump cuts, changes in pace, graphic match, juxtaposed frames.
Diegeis- In terms of media diegeis refers to the world of the music video and how the artists portray this. Vernallis states how the diegeis is revealed in quite a slow format, there will be many repetitions throughout the video and some of these frames will be inferred more important than others. This is due to the way they are shot through the camerawork.

Example of slow motion:
Example of special effect editing:
Example of use of base tracks in the edit:
