8. Review of previous students work
This is one of my favourite videos from previous students work. This is one of my favourite video as the enjoyed the different edits they did for example these two edits where they did an effect which reverses the shot, this is one of my most enjoyed shots as they added this effect in time with the instrumental of the song which follows the conventions of Carol Versailles's theory.

Moreover they used a variety of base tracks, which was at different angels and it fit the genre of music really well.

Furthermore, I also liked how they added a filter to fit in with the song , it creates a eerie atmosphere.

The function of a music video
What is a music video?
" A videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics"
A music video is also a visual representation of a song.
The production of a music video is however is more complex, it is a combination of stylised visuals, structure, camera and editing techniques. Music videos have become a vital part of the media industry and dictate how successful an artist is and the number of sales they make.
A music video has a many purposes but its main goal is to promote the single, the album and the artist. In order for a music video to do this it has to:

A music video has a many purposes but its main goal is to promote the single, the album and the artist. In order for a music video to do this it has to:
- Sell a song that the audience can remember from the video
- Ensure that the audience has a better understanding of the song visually and lyrically
- For the artist to ENTERTAIN the audience through dancing, singing, performing and even through their physical appearance.
Alternatively, music videos is a marketing tool used as a visual aid to sell the artist and their brand. Artists use generic signifier's that help address their target audience. These generic signifier's state their genre and the type of audience they want to appeal to.
An example of a music video that I would consider to be an example of a great music video form for hip hop is:

Traditional narrative analyses doesn't apply to pop videos because:
1. pop videos are narrated around songs
2. pop songs uses the singer as both the actor and narrator
3. the singer looks directly into the camera (to involve viewers at home)
Pop videos are often 3 to 4 minutes long and have a form of closure and ending. Their videos usually have built a climax just before it begins to fade or a consistent repetition before fading away.
In some cases the visualization of a song may go beyond the original meaning of a song. It may be visually pleasing to the audience to encourage a repeated viewing. However some videos may be promoting other visuals such as films.
There are 3 types of relations between songs an videos:
1. Illustration: where a video tells the story of the lyrics.
2. Amplification: when videos tell the meaning to the song that do not contradict the lyrics.
3. Disjuncture: When there is no or little connection between the lyrics and videos.
Example:
Disjuncture:
Man in the mirror is about self recognition but the video is about full racial world events.
In pop videos there are a few easily recognizable feature. In pop videos women are often presented as objects of male desires; for example, Madonna and Beyoncé deliberately present themselves for males to look at. Moreover in some pop videos different instruments are represents by different objects.
Some artists try appeal to a wider audience without visually without trying to alienate their target audience. Also some videos that were made specifically for films often incorporate scenes from the film.

I just decided to do a mainstream artist that's well know and falls into the 'Pop' genre.

4.) Andrew Goodwin
Andrew Goodwin
·
Andrew
Goodwin’s theory states that the traditional narrative music video doesn't apply to pop videos and this is because pop videos approach narrative from a different angel to novels or film.
·
The
reasons for this is because the music video uses a different narrative
structure
1. Video is built upon the subject of
the song
2. The singer tells the story as a
narrator or character
3. The singer breaks the 4th
wall by addressing the audience by looking directly at the camera.
·
Pop
videos the reflects the song in a way that shots would be repeated like the
choruses or a line. The repetition in the song makes it easier for us to
identify the genre and associate similar sounding songs or videos to the genre
·
The
ways of streaming the video is different also because it can be viewed on the
TV, the song would be heard on the radio and the song may be a advertising film
or TV- tie in making the song familiar.
·
The
closure and ending of the music video has to be done in 3 minutes this is to
fit in with the structure of the song. The way it ends is there’s a built-up,
climax or a constant repetition before fading away
·
The
visualisation of a song may go beyond the original meaning. The aim of the
video is to provide visual pleasure that encourages repeated viewing which then
promotes the song/music.
·
The
song can also be promoting other commodities such as a film, a beverage of some
sort, technology i.e.. Dr Dre beats.
·
There
are three types of relations between songs and video and that’s
1. Illustration
2. Amplification
3. Disjuncture.
·
Pop
videos also have recognisable features in the song. Females are often used as
an object for males. This can be seen in hip-hop, rap and heavy metal videos.
·
Videos
try to appeal to a wider audience without alienating the core target audience.
1) Introduction
Hi I'm Ernestina :)
I'm in A2 and I'm currently studying media alongside this RS and English Lit an Lang. Hopefully the music video go according to plan and that it visually comes together reflecting the whole groups creative ideas to produce a really successful music video. I hope to study media at uni and do an internship so this would be very good for my portfolio.
This project is very interesting to me as I've always wanted to be involved in the music industry one way or another so this would provide me with the experience and opportunities I need.
Before the summer break we were given a task to create a website on weebly for an artist of our choice. I chose one of my guilty pleasures Nicki Minaj. Making a website was very interesting and fun as I have a huge interest in them however I found it quite challenging at first because I've never used weebly before and because there was much choice with templates but I'm happy with the ending product.

2.) What is the function of a music video?
What is a music video?
In class we had to watch three examples of music videos from different genres and identify the generic signifiers for each genre. I then analysed these music videos based on the location, costume, lighting and how this affected the mood/ tone based on the genre. This allowed me to focus on the stereotypical view the audience have of different music genres and how the artist's utilizes these views within their music videos. As you can see in the pictures I have uploaded we looked at Rap, Pop and Rock and there was a clear demonstration of generic signifiers amongst the genres.
- The definition of a music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music; most commonly a song. It can also be defined in the most simplistic way as a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

- Music videos have become a vital part of the music industry as they play a major part in the success of the artist and the sales of the their singles and albums released.
Functions of a Music Video:
There are many functions of a music video such as:
- For entertainment purposes
- To make more money
- To help to create a star image
- To tell a story through the lyrics and visuals (narrative)
- For marketing purposes
- Increase the fan base
- For advertising purposes
But the main purpose of a music video is for the artist to use it as a key PROMOTIONAL tool and this is the main function. This therefore appeals to a visual audience as it is a marketing tool that is uses as a visual aid to help sell the artist, their brand and their products to as wide an audience as possible,
An example of a successful music video is Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' single as it was listed in the guinness world of records 2006 after selling over 9 million.
1.) Introduction.
Hi my name is Summer Borland, I am 17 years old and am currently in my second year of studying Media Studies alongside with Sociology and also a EPQ. I hope to do very well in creating a Music Video as it is something that is very interesting and creative which will allow me to show off all aspects of my skills. I thoroughly enjoyed creating a short clip last year on a teen drama as my group was able to work as a team but also have our own independent ideas we could post on to the blog.
During the summer term we had to create a website using weebly on a artist of our choice: I decided to choose the very well known artist Drake. This is because he is an artist that I listen to a lot and his music appeals to me. I am going to post a link of the website that I created.

Mainstream vs Indie; One direction VS Lanterns on the Lake.
One Direction.
One direction are a manufactured pop group that have a target audience of young females aged between 12-25. They are owned by a Record Label known as Syco Music which is a British record label signed by Simon Cowell. Syco Music is a subsidiary of Syco Entertainment which was founded in 2002. It is one of the worlds leading global music, television and film production companies. As they support global franchises such as X factor and Got Talent. This is where one direction have originated from through performing on X Factor live shows.
Through researching this record label it is clear that they specialise in the pop genre as many artists such as James Aurther, Labrnith, Little Mix and Ella Henderson. However they also have artists from different genres such as classical from Susan Boyle.
This is a screen shot I have taken of some of merchandise One Direction have available to their target audience, as you can see they have jewellery, clothing, toys and games and many more other products. They have also have their music available on their website for fans of their band to purchase through their website this is through digital tracks, CD albums and itunes.
One direction signed with Simon Cowell's record label Syco Records aftering finishing in third place on the seventh series of X Factor in 2010. They then become a international success through social media sites as their albums topped charts in most of the major markets and also had hit singles including "What makes you beautiful."
Lanterns on the Lake.
Lanterns on the lake are an indie-rock band who formed in 2007 that have a target audience of men aged 18 to 35. They are signed to an independent label called Bella Union who was founded by Simon Raymonde and Robin Guthrie in 1997. This label is distributed by the wholly independent distributors (PIAS) worldwide. In 2010, 2012 and 2014 the record label won the independent record company of the year music award at the music week awards.
This record label specialises in all sorts of similar genres to Lanterns on the Lake such as Indie, rock, folk, space rock, country, shoegaze and dream pop. This shows how independent labelling is stereotyped into being this kind of genre of music. Furthermore the Lanterns on the Lake also have many merchandise and ancillary products but not as many as one direction due to them not being a well known mainstream band.
They have products such as Tees, Posters, Vinyls, Bags and CD's which are available to purchase on their website. Despite them having a few products to sell there are not as many ancillary products as one direction as they have lots of different ways of buying these products through different sites. Also they can afford to produce a variety within each of the products such as many different Tees, Posters etc.
Lanterns on the Lake released two EP's before signing a deal with their current record label Bella Union.
