It can also be defined in the most simplistic way as a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

But the main purpose of a music video is for the artist to use it as a key PROMOTIONAL tool and this is the main function. This therefore appeals to a visual audience as it is a marketing tool that is uses as a visual aid to help sell the artist, their brand and their products to as wide an audience as possible,
An example of a successful music video is Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' single as it was listed in the guinness world of records 2006 after selling over 9 million.
