2.) What is the function of a music video?

    What is a music video?
  • The definition of a music video is a short film or video that accompanies a complete piece of music; most commonly a song. It can also be defined in the most simplistic way as a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

  • Music videos have become a vital part of the music industry as they play a major part in the success of the artist and the sales of the their singles and albums released.
Functions of a Music Video:

There are many functions of a music video such as:
  • For entertainment purposes
  • To make more money
  • To help to create a star image
  • To tell a story through the lyrics and visuals (narrative)
  • For marketing purposes
  • Increase the fan base
  • For advertising purposes

But the main purpose of a music video is for the artist to use it as a key PROMOTIONAL tool and this is the main function. This therefore appeals to a visual audience as it is a marketing tool that is uses as a visual aid to help sell the artist, their brand and their products to as wide an audience as possible,

An example of a successful music video is Micheal Jackson's 'Thriller' single as it was listed in the guinness world of records 2006 after selling over 9 million.

In class we had to watch three examples of music videos from different genres and identify the generic signifiers for each genre. I then analysed these music videos based on the location, costume, lighting and how this affected the mood/ tone based on the genre. This allowed me to focus on the stereotypical view the audience have of different music genres and how the artist's utilizes these views within their music videos. As you can see in the pictures I have uploaded we looked at Rap, Pop and Rock and there was a clear demonstration of generic signifiers amongst the genres.
