A music video is also a visual representation of a song.
The production of a music video is however is more complex, it is a combination of stylised visuals, structure, camera and editing techniques. Music videos have become a vital part of the media industry and dictate how successful an artist is and the number of sales they make.
A music video has a many purposes but its main goal is to promote the single, the album and the artist. In order for a music video to do this it has to:
- Sell a song that the audience can remember from the video
- Ensure that the audience has a better understanding of the song visually and lyrically
- For the artist to ENTERTAIN the audience through dancing, singing, performing and even through their physical appearance.
Alternatively, music videos is a marketing tool used as a visual aid to sell the artist and their brand. Artists use generic signifier's that help address their target audience. These generic signifier's state their genre and the type of audience they want to appeal to.
